Most of us who listen to rock music are familiar with those little musical phrases that lend the song a distinct feel and personality. These are called riffs, the characteristic and often, repetitive chord progressions or melodies that determine the rhythm and style of a song. Making guitar riffs is quite simple, yet also an art.
Tuning the guitar is the next thing a guitar player should know. It is where he can further intensify his mastery and familiarity with the guitar. It is a gift if a person has the remarkable natural ability of hearing. He can determine if the guitar has good quality through hearing its tune for the first time. However, there are people who do not posses that certain gift. But there are other ways of tuning the guitar. One way is the ordinary method.
Before Practice: Listening – Get yourself enthusiastic about having fun with guitar by listening to two or three your favorite guitar songs. Look for songs that get you really psyched to spend time playing and make use of that energy when you begin your session.
Unfortunately, till today, no musician has penned down this skill into words so that students can read the theory and learn how to play guitar by ear. On top of it, there is the old wife’s tale, which says, “You have either got it or you ain’t!” This statement might de-motivate many guitar learners to even try playing by ear.
