A few days ago, my 7 year old daughter came home with what I thought was a challenging school project—designing and creating her own game from scratch. Jenna was stumped at first. She came up with a few ideas but then quickly gave up as she found some “glitches” in her plan. This got me thinking about Smart Women and the game of entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship, don’t do it just for the money. The lure of Entrepreneurship, a chance to be your own boss and live the American dream has captivated many. Have you ever wanted a big house, some fine cars, and have servants at your disposal? Consider this, it will probably never happen.
What really bothered me is that the concepts are nice, but they are not forged in the relentless heat of reality. I had the impression that the article was penned from the comforts of a corporate cubicle than the tough trenches of business ownership. I’ve been self employed for 16 years, have an MBA and can tell you that you can “visualize it” all you want. It won’t pay the bills. However, a lot of hard work and then some more hard work just might.
All of these reasons are examples of why people Entrepreneurship, and these are just a few. But you get the idea. Why do we work – for money, right? Well working from home can not only provide you an income, but it allows you to work your own hours, choose where and when you go to work, there is no boss telling you what to do, and you control how much you earn, not someone else.
B.Define the hours you want to work right from the beginning, this can obviously be adjusted if needed later on, but have an idea of when you want to start work and when you need to finish to switch to mom mode. Most online jobs do not require a specific time of work, that’s the beauty of working from home. However there are a few that may need you to answer calls for example and therefore incorporate your hours to meet your chosen companies time scales. Work out if you want to start as soon as the family have left for school or work, or if you have any small children do you need them to be in bed or will you have a carer for them.
You don’t need to spend hours creating a formal business plan, but it’s important you have an idea of where you want your business to go before you start. Sit down and work out what products you want to promote and how you’ll market your website to attract new visitors. This will give you a guide as to what things you need to work on.
But at first you will work around the clock. Yes that’s right, be sure to let your other bosses know that you need to work around the clock and on weekends.
So my advice is this – if you are not enthusiastic about your business or aggressive enough in your marketing, you are probably not going to succeed. That’s no shame. 99% of online businesses fail. But if you want to join the 1% that is successful, get enthusiastic about something.
